Metanoia: When life changes you… and your system learns to hold more (Easter reflection)
There is a Greek word I want to offer you this Easter. Metanoia. A word that doesn’t translate easily… because it is not just a concept. It is an experience.
It comes from:
meta – beyond, change
nous – the mind, perception, the way we see
So metanoia is not guilt. It is not punishment. It is a recalibration of the mind… a shift in perception that happens when life has truly touched you.
If I’m honest… the moments that changed me the most were not the ones I planned. They were the moments I couldn’t control. The people I loved… who left. Some because life took them. Some because their cycle with me ended. And for a long time, I experienced that as a loss. As something that closed me.
But something has softened over the years. Now, when I remember them… I don’t only feel what ended. I feel what opened. Each one of them became a passage. A way through which I met parts of myself I didn’t know existed.
Through one, I learned how deeply I can love.
Through another, I saw where I abandon myself.
Through another, I discovered my voice.
Through another… I learned how to stay.
They didn’t just “come and go”. They expanded me.
What I didn’t understand back then is that every experience… especially the ones that stretch us, break us, undo us… builds capacity in the system.
Capacity to feel more without shutting down.
Capacity to stay present without escaping.
Capacity to hold love without losing ourselves.
Capacity to witness endings… without collapsing.
This is not mental. It happens in the body, in the nervous system. In the quiet spaces where something learns:
“I can be here… and not disappear.”

And then… metanoia happens!
Not as a decision. Not as a strategy. But as a natural consequence. At some point, without forcing it, you realize: You don’t see things the same way anymore.
Not because you were wrong before. But because you have become someone who can hold more. More truth, more nuance, more complexity, more life. This is metanoia. A recalibration of perception born through increased capacity.
If I look closely…
I can trace every shift in my perception back to a person.
Someone who challenged me.
Someone who loved me.
Someone who left.
Someone who stayed longer than I expected… or less than I needed. And through them… my mind changed, my heart changed, my way of being in the world changed.
They gave me something far greater than their presence. They gave me a new way of seeing. There is a quiet peace that comes when you stop asking: “Why didn’t this last?” and start seeing: “What did this open in me?” Because not everything is meant to stay. Some connections are not here to be permanent. They are here to evolve you. And when their cycle completes, nothing real is lost. It transforms into awareness, into depth, into a more open heart.
If Easter is resurrection… then metanoia is the path that leads to it. The gentle death of the old way of seeing. The release of dentities that no longer fit. The softening of rigid truths. And the emergence of something more alive… more honest… more spacious.
Maybe this Easter… instead of asking what you did wrong, ask something else:
Who has changed the way you see life?
And who have you become… because of them?
Stay with that. Not to analyze it, but to feel it. Because somewhere in that space… your heart might open just a little more.
You don’t force change.
You become someone who can hold it.
